But before you visit an employment lawyer, it’s important to know what protections you have in your state. In this post, we’ll go over the classes protected in Missouri.

National Employment Discrimination Protections

Certain protections are available in all 50 states. Under federal labor laws, employers can’t discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, citizenship status, disability, genetic information or religion. They can’t discriminate based on age if an individual is 40-70 years old. Discrimination based on sex is also against the law. That includes factors like pregnancy, childbirth, and medical conditions.

If you feel like you’ve been denied employment or terminated for any of these reasons, you have grounds to contact an employment lawyer.

Missouri Employment Discrimination Protections

Missouri State law prohibits discrimination for all the national factors, as well as a few extras. Employees in Missouri can’t be denied employment or terminated based on physical or mental disability, AIDS or HIV status, or off-duty tobacco use.

However, not all businesses are large enough to be covered by employment discrimination regulations.
